Finished Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas over the weekend. GREAT. I'll be reading more HST soon. I loved that the now-widespread term "Gonzo journalism" actually DOES have its roots in the Muppets. The Great Gonzo was (is) my favorite muppet, and Hunter is arguably the first to coin the term applying to his writing style - part fiction, part real-life, part exaggeration - a staggering, stumbling stream of consciousness narrative in the 1st person. Just when it seems that HST has completely lost it, a profound insight jumps off the page at you, written so artfully that you have to re-read the entire paragraph.

By the way, we all know what the middle aged Hunter S. Thompson looked like (balding, giant aviators, Bermuda shorts and Hawaiian shirt) but get this:

Palin was asked if she would consider running against Obama in 2012, and she said that she was open to it. To which I say - awesome! I would love it if she ran again BO in 2012. That'd be hilarious.

Note to Sarah - if you're planning on saying that you'd be up for running for POTUS at a pre-screened Q&A, I would consider not writing your talking points on your hand in pen.

Just read into the hate-seeded, ignorant, bitchfest that is the Tea Party movement. I knew that it was hyped up WAAAAAY out of proportion by FOXnews (but its not biased!) and in turn crafted into a pseudo-event picked up by other news outlets.

This huge 'movement' that Palin was speaking to over the weekend that is the greatest hope of the GOP? 1,100 people.

SeaLab 2021 was teh best show ever. The robot post reminded me of this episode. Its so random and hilarious - perfect SeaLab. I loved this show in college. You'll get a better idea of why I talk the way I do in groups.

TexasToast passed me a link a year or so ago of BigDog - a terrifying robotic dog-like creature that is semi-autonomous. Link to original creepy video here of an early prototype demonstrating the walking capability in rough terrain.


You can't even kick it over!! It's better than you! In ice and snow! YOU'D have fallen on that ice - but it catches itself twice! Scared yet? How about now?


Well, get ready for more because those scary little f_ckers just won a $32 million dollar contract to put these things into production.

Last 3 days in 5 mins or less...

• Watched the State of the Union address last night. I freaking love our president. I would pay good money to have been able to take some of his Law and Politics classes at the University of Chicago. Critics (Palin) called the speech last night a 'lecture.' Maybe they're right. It did come off that way. But you know what I think? Most of Washington NEEDS a lecture, and possibly detention on the weekend! Parts of the speech WERE scolding, but rather than whining about it like an admonished teenager, maybe... I dunno... internalize what you were told and learn from it.
• Watched (500) Days of Summer again. That movie is excellent. The title screen is super cool, the writing is funny, and the message is both heart-wrenching and hopeful at the same time.
  
• Used my new shoes for the first time, and they're super comfy! A good buy.
• Having some crazy re-structuring at work today. I've managed to come through several of these re-organizations and re-alignments without losing my job, and luckily today was no different. Threaded another needle.

Hand me up

Its not that often that I get older brother to take any 'hand me ups' - but there was one good one in particular recently. See below:

That's right, its a vintage Iowa Hawkeyes '86 Rose Bowl t-shirt. Its the softest thing in the planet, other than the Snuggle bear.

And, of course, I handed this piece of hawkeye apparel down the way any respecting Stater would - throwing it in the garbage for a hawkeye fan to dig out. (jokes. It had stains from facewash stuff on ancient tee material and stained it pinkish around the neck. And I was just giving it to Goodwill, not the garbage.)

Goals for 2010

• Grow a beard. (I'm thinking No-Shave-November this year)
  
• Learn to solo the way I want to be able to.
• Go to Church.
• (Start to) learn another language via Rosetta Stone.
• Learn to skateboard.
• Build and paint a skateboard.
  
• Grow my hair out. (not the same time as the beard.)
