More Potter

On a tip from Stoppable, I found this:
The 7th and final cover of the Harry Potter series.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is out July 21st. Good Luck finding a copy, the book has already gone to reprint due to the volume of pre-orders. I plan to get my (or technically LES', I collect the paperback versions) pre-ordered copy that day and lock myself in my apartment with no communication with the outside world for the 2 days it'll probably take me to read it. If someone tells me how it ends before I read it for myself... there's going to be a murder. AVEDA KEDAVRA!!

Is the paperback coming out the same day as the hardback? you better read the hardback with 48 hours or you will see it on the web or in the newsaper or some little kid in the grocery line will yell it out and you will be sunk.

I'd hate to have to use the killing curse on a kid in the grocery line. Lets just say, they won't be "the boy who lived."

you would understand if you read the books! very cool cover. i was trying to decide what it could tell about the story, as often in the previous books, you can get hints from the cover alone. unfortunately there is naught but harry!! since you spelled it aveda instead of avada when you pronounced the spell the damage would most likely be minimal :). i just played that scene out in my mind and realized i need to get back to studying...i have a foot of parchment due to snape tomorrow on the uses of bezoars...

i suspect the shadowy figures to Harry's right may be better defined on the actual cover.

also -- what's with that hand gesture? since it's his left hand and most of the covers show him holding his wand in that hand; i'm guessing he's learned at least some spells he can cast w/o a wand.

thoughts on that amulet around his neck? he's not given to jewelry, so it's likely an item of some import/power. didn't the horcrux @ the end of #6 reside in an amulet? but given the contents found in that object, why keep it?

I believe it is the ACTUAL Slytherin's locket which he will find and destroy at the begining of the 7th book. Since someone very important to him died trying to destroy it, it might serve as a reminder. (Much like dumbledore kept the black ring horcrux on his hand for a time) And good call, harry's left hand is wandless, I hadn't noticed.

If you look at the full cover (front and back), Harry and He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named appear to be mirror images of each other. Both have wandless hands outstretched and eyes intently focused on something. Infact, neither have a wand at all.

Well, it does make sense. Both Harry and Voldemort's wands come from the same pheonix, who gave only two feathers. We've already seen what happens when both wands cast powerful spells at the other in the graveyard at the end of Goblet of Fire. Priori Incantatem and other unpredictable magic ensues. Obviously, the way around this is not using a wand, but that's never been done in JKR-land. True, non-verbal spells such as Sectumsempra and Levicorpus don't require and incantation, but still require the caster to have a wand in his hand. Its why Expelleramous (sp) is so effective. Could it be that the Voldemort and Harry have found a way to cast magic without a wand?

it may also be worthy of noting that the UK cover of the book features only a locket with green emeralds in an "S". Obviously Slythern's locket. However, the locket/amulet Harry seems to be wearing on the American cover definitely doesn't have any discernible letters on it.
Also, Harry might not yet know how to effectively destroy the soul residing in the object yet. Its not just a matter of bashing the thing; Riddle's diary had the basilisk/serpent's magically poisonous fang stabbed through it, the diary itself was around intact for most of the book. The black ring horcrux is mentioned often offhand in pensieve flashbacks, and dumbledore wears it most of HP6 before destroying it somehow. It could be that Harry MUST keep the horcrux on himself until he figures out a way to destroy it. Just as Luke must have the robotic hand to remind him of his father, Darth Vader, Harry must carry the constant reminder of his enemy. Obi-wan/Dumbledore is no longer able to directly intercede, leaving Harry/Luke alone with no parents, no safety net but two friends who will eventually fall in love on his quest.
Okay, I'm just as guilty as Emily, I'll talk Harry Potter to anyone who'll listen.
